Volunteer

We could not do it without our volunteers! Join our volunteer team and help us make a difference in our marine environment.

We now have a Junior Volunteer Program, in which individuals aged 12 to 15 can volunteer (with a parent or legal guardian present and both the supervising adult and prospective junior volunteer must attend the orientation training sessions)!

Volunteer Orientations are held virtually each month. Once you have completed your application you will be able to sign up for the orientation that best fits your schedule.

Office Assistant

Job Title: Office Assistant

General Description:

The Office Assistant is responsible for supporting administration, operation, fundraising and volunteer needs for a small Not-For-Profit based in Riverhead, NY. This position is a part-time hourly non-exempt position that will be 25-32 hours per week.  Schedule will be determined based on organization needs and candidates’ availability. This position will require one weekend day and flexibility to work nights and weekends for events. 

Reporting Relationship: 

Director of Administration

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administer and perform administration and clerical functions
  • Assist Director of Development and Administration
  • Coordinate office, maintain office supplies and equipment
  • Phone response and management
  • Assist with fundraising events
    • Event promotion and signage
    • Receiving and managing event RSVPs and sponsorships
    • Solicit, organize and pick up donations
    • Event set up and breakdown
    • Manage supporter communications
  • Assist with social media accounts and content
  • Maintain and keep current organization’s website
  • Process all incoming donations
  • Accounting data entry
  • Assist with volunteer management and oversight

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications including Excel, Outlook, Word and Publisher, QuickBooks and relevant social media applications including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The candidate should have 2-3 years’ experience in a similar position and must be a professional, well-spoken and team player with excellent organizational skills. Must be able to lift 25-50 lbs.

Position Title: Biologist II

Position Overview

The New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC) is now accepting applications for a Biologist II. The application deadline is May 15th or until ideal candidate has been selected. This is a part time position up to 32 hours per week with no benefits.

The New York Marine Rescue Center is a rescue and rehabilitation organization that promotes marine conservation. Our mission is to preserve and protect the marine environment through conservation efforts including research, rescue, rehabilitation, and education. As a 501 (c) non-profit, we are the primary responders for sick or injured seals, sea turtles, and small cetaceans, and maintain the only marine mammal and sea turtle rehabilitation center in New York State.

Biologist II Competencies

  • Support operations of the marine mammal and sea turtle program
  • Operate 24-hour hotline for stranded marine mammals and sea turtles
  • Coordinates stranding response and leads volunteers in the field during live marine mammals and sea turtles’ responses, relocations, and transports
  • Provide husbandry and care for animals collected through Rescue Program
  • Administer medical therapy as prescribed by Veterinarian
  • Manage volunteers and interns on-site and in the field
  • Provide proper care and maintenance of equipment including scheduled maintenance of lab equipment, field equipment and rescue vehicles
  • Maintain animal records and stranding related database, assists in federal reporting requirements
  • Perform postmortem exams of sea turtles

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus on biological science or veterinary technology preferred
  • 2-3 years’ experience in sea turtle or marine mammal husbandry, stranding or related field
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Good to excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e. Microsoft, Excel, PowerPoint, Access); knowledge of GIS preferred
  • Able to work and maintain professionalism under strenuous conditions (inclement weather, long hours, heavy lifting)
  • Willing to work weekends and holidays as well as periodic 24 hour on-call shifts
  • Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license
